Bryozoan Species from Southern Limburg, the Netherlands

1  Introduction

When I found dozens of Bryozoan species in the Curfs and ENCI quarries during my fieldstudy in Southern Limburg in 1998, I wanted to identify them to the species level. An inventory of the literature learned that there was no comprehensive study of the Bryozoans in the Maastricht area. Although E. Voigt from Hamburg did much research on Bryozoa in this area, an overview is lacking. The Natural History Museum in Maastricht did not even have a collection of identified Bryozoa. I felt the need to make an inventory of the species described in the literature, because I wanted to identify the species I found. This can be used to aid further research on the Bryozoa in the Maastricht area. It can be very interesting to do further research on the biostratigraphy of the Bryozoa and the relation to the K/T boundary. Detailed biostratigraphic research in the Maastricht area has been done only by R. Lagaaij in the ENCI quarry in 1951.

An attempt was made to make a complete inventory of the Bryozoan species possibly present in the Maastricht area in Southern Limburg, the Netherlands. All the species and synonyms found in the literature are listed in the "Alphabetical Species and synonym list". The listed Bryozoa are known from upper Cretaceous and lower Paleocene sediments in Northern Europe, but not all the species listed are known from the Maastricht area. The species can be accessed from both the alphabetical list and the systematic list of families.
