3 Stratigraphy Introduction
The stratigraphy of the Maastrichtian in the Maastricht
area was first described in 1849 by Dumont as subdivision of the
Senonian (d'Orbigny 1842). The ENCI quarry is the type-locality
of the maastrichtian. Several researchers split up the stratigraphy
in the maastricht area in more units. The most recent lithostratigraphic
sections are from W.M. Felder. These sections were used for orientation
in the field. Every stratigraphic unit in the Maastricht area is
described with codes (Felder). The Maastrichtian begins with the
Vijlen member (IIIc) and ends with the Meerssen member (IVf).
